8 day dog sledding safari - Drevja Tour

Drevja Tour includes a three day introductory course in dog sledding that will teach you the essentials on handling dogs and sled, on harnessing and care of your assigned dogs and in building a good rapport with your team. After the introductory course you are prepared to go on a two day overnight safari with a total length of up to 100 km and one night accommodation in a basic but very cosy cabin in the mountains. This tour leads you right into the magnificent landscape of the Norwegian-Swedish border mountains. Experience endless vast plains in the highlands and enjoy many spectacular views. Drevja Tour will be an experience of your life time!

Itinerary:

Day 1 Saturday:
Make your own way either by car directly to Ljørdalen or by coach from Oslo City Bus Terminal or Airport Oslo Gardermoen to Trysil. In Trysil you will be met by our driver. Transfer to Ljørdalen where you will be warmly welcomed at the Villmark Lodge. The Villmark Husky Farm where your dog-sledding tours will start from is situated just a few kilometres outside the village of Ljørdalen in the hills. Duration of transfer between Husky Farm and Villmark Lodge is approx. 10 to 15 minutes.

Day 2 Sunday:
Today you will receive a comprehensive introduction into dog sledding and you will be able to familiarize yourself with the dogs. You will learn their names and all about training, harnessing and handling of the dogs and the sled. Soon you will be able to harness the dogs by yourself and to drive your “own” dog sled on a short tour.

Day 3 and 4, Monday and Tuesday:
In the next two days our experienced guides will give you a great insight into the world of dog sledding. Slowly you will become a “team” with your assigned dogs and you will find that it is the dogs themselves and the special relationship with the dogs you develop over the days that becomes the greatest of your experiences. Step by step the length and level of the tours will be increased. Accompanied by our guides you will drive your “own” sled with 4 - 6 huskies on prepared trails through the Norwegian winter wonderland. Our guides are always there to help you. On Tuesday evening optional possibility to join an evening horse sleigh tour lit by torches (approx. EUR 49,- per person, min. 2 passengers).

Day 5, Wednesday. Dog sledding tour (approx. 25 - 50 km) at the edge of Fulufjell National Park. Today's dog sledding tour will give you the opportunity to deepen your knowledge in dog sledding that you gained during the first few days. Today's tour will take you already deep into the wilderness around Fulufjell N.P. Lead your sled through pristine primeval forest and treeless plains enjoying some great panoramas. This tour is a perfect preparation for your tomorrow's two day overnight safari.

Day 6, Thursday. Dog sledding safari (approx. 25 - 50 km) at the edge of Fulufjell National Park. After learning all essentials on dog sledding during your introductory course on the first three days and yesterday's full day wilderness experience you are well prepared to go on your two day overnight safari. The trail is an ambitious one and leads you right into a spectacular scenery of unique and pristine nature and wildlife reserves that continue into the nearby Fulufjell National Park. Across the timber-line you will enjoy the immense vastness of the highland plains and stunning views into the surrounding valleys. Your overnight will be a very basic but cosy cabin with wood-burning stove but without running water and electricity. You will have a wonderful authentic experience up there - guaranteed.

Day 7, Friday. Dog sledding safari (approx. 25 - 50 km) at the edge of Fulufjell National Park. The cabin in the unspoiled wilderness of the mountains is our ideal base camp for one of the most spectacular trails at the edge of the Fulufjell National Park. Discover the amazing beauty of this winter scenery right at the Norwegian-Swedish border. Cross frozen lakes and rivers and enjoy driving over endless plains and gently rounded mountain tops. Live your winter dream, experience unspoiled nature and enjoy your unforgettable dog sledding adventure! In the afternoon you return to the Villmark Husky Farm and the Villmark Lodge. Back in Villmark Lodge you will have a great last night together with your co-travellers and new friends before you leave next morning with unforgettable memories.

 Please note:

  • Level: easy / moderate. The length and level of the dog sledding tours will be adjusted to the skills of the group. The tours are suitable for everyone who has a reasonable level of fitness. An average level of fitness is required as dog-sledding can be quite exhausting for the musher himself depending on the weather and snow conditions. It might be necessary to assist the dogs when climbing up a hill.
  • This tour requires a sense of team spirit and your willingness to give a hand during the harnessing of the dogs. Together many things can be done easier and faster and while assisting each other you easily get to know your co-travellers and make new friends. On the three day overnight tour you are on a “genuine” safari. That means that you will be responsible for your assigned dogs and need to assist your guide in feeding and care of the dogs.
  • The meals during the overnight safari will be simpler than during the rest of your stay as the food has to be carried on the sleds and has to be prepared on the wood-burning stove by the participants.
  • Please advise body weight and age at time of booking.
  • Children & minimum age: Minimum age for steering an own sled is 18 years. 16 years if accompanied by an adult. This tour is not suitable for children under the age of 16 years. Families with children younger than 16 years please refer to our 8 day Villmark Husky Farm tour.
  • Child discount: There is no child discount on the full fare for children of 16 years or older (minimum age).
  • Itinerary and touring content are subject to change due to weather conditions and skills of the group.
